Have you ever been curious about printmaking arts? Has the art of commercial printing techniques or its use in the modern fine arts ever been a subject of interest? Making prints has a long history, largely as a commercial art but also as a unique fine art in its own right. Lithography, like wood engraving or etching, is one of the famous and popular printing arts. It is often used commercially to create newspapers and magazines. When used industrially, it is often referred to as offset lithography.

Many artists in the modern arts movement have adopted this print technique in their creation of unique fine arts. Its simplicity and beauty have made it a compelling art form, and the printing process is quite wonderful. Rather than engraving or etching into a wood image, the artist begins by sketching a drawing on a stone or plate with a greasy crayon. The stone is then covered with an acid-gum mixture, which prevents ink from sticking to parts of the stone that have not been drawn on. Then the stone and image are dampened. The greasy, drawn areas repel the water. When ink is applied, it sticks to the greasy drawing. A piece of paper is then pressed over the stone resulting in the image's transfer. If you know how traditional engraving techniques work (in summary, by etching onto a plate or engraving into wood), imagine how exciting it would be to have both these printing techniques at your disposal.

Many famous modern art artists adopted and adapted this unique printmaking technique to their own needs, raising its sophistication and quality to a new level. Modern art geniuses such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Marc Chagall are among the best practitioners of this fine art. M.C. Escher is extremely famous for his curious prints. Honore Daumier, the famous social satirist of the 19th century, is also well-known for his prints. Explore their prints today and learn more about this unique fine art. And why not explore other techniques as well, like etching, wood block, and wood engraving?
