The exploration of contemporary fine arts reveals that it is not limited in its many influences. African traditional art, ancient mythology, even the development of photography, have all influenced the creation of contemporary art techniques. Woodcut printing is one such influence. A woodcut is simply an engraved block of wood from which images are printed. Modern artists have made great use of similar printmaking techniques.

The history of unique fine arts since the Renaissance is full of examples of exquisite woodblock printing techniques. Titian, for example, the great fine arts master, made his stunning edition of St Jerome in the Wilderness this way. And the illustration of books was made possible by the discovery of woodblock printing techniques. But if you are interested in contemporary fine arts, you may wonder how it has been influenced by what might seem like a limited body of printmaking techniques?

Also known as wood engraving, this printmaking method has been an extremely important feature of recent art-making. Expressionists like Paul Gauguin, famous for his unique paintings of Tahiti, produced a series of woodblock prints to illustrate his time in the tropics and more radical images than Gauguin's were produced by the Expressionist Erich Heckel. Helen Frankenthaler composed the stunning print, Savage Breeze, in the mid-20th century. More recently Joel Shapiro and Willie Cole have produced cutting edge, contemporary woodblock prints. Limited edition prints of these unique works are difficult to find, but high quality posters capture their bold lines and feel and are more affordable than limited edition version.

As you collect unique fine arts, whether prints or posters or limited edition prints, consider exploring different avenues recent art has taken. Woodblock images, for example, are an ideal place to begin building an interesting collection united by a common theme. Thematic collections are often the most fascinating. Printmaking offers you a unique window onto the history and practice of modern arts.
